After an extremely long wait for Toyota to finally make the beloved Supra again, to what felt like an even longer wait for its release, once we found out that they would be making the Supra again the day is finally here. As of this July you can, at long last, finally, purchase the brand new 2020 Toyota GR Supra.
Whether you’ve loved the Supra for years, or you’re just discovery what all the craze is about, we’ve got everything you need to know about the all new GR Supra. While there is a lot to unpack here, we’re going to start with the Supra’s name itself. The GR stands for GAZOO Racing which Umansky Toyota (Charlottesville, VA) says is is Toyota’s global racing division. Here Toyota puts their love of motorsports and innovation through the ringer. The GAZOO Racing team has earned victories across the field of motorsports and includes wins at the FIA World Rally Championship to the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Next we’ll take a peek under the hood, because a stunningly beautiful race car is no good if it can’t perform like a race car. With a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged engine sitting in it’s engine bay that pumps out 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque the Supra does not disappoint. At this point you may be thinking of some V8-powered American Muscle car with more horsepower like the Ford Mustang with 460 hp, for example, what you’re not taking into account is the fact that the Supra is way lighter. The Supra only weights 3,400-pounds which means it’s just as fast as its rivals. The Supra screams from zero to sixty in just 4.1-seconds. The horsepower on the Supra doesn’t quit until you hit the 6,500 rpm redline and the 365 lb-ft of torque arrives at 1,600 rpm.
The twin-turbocharged engine of the Supra comes mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This transmission provides smooth quick shifts and is extremely responsive when using the steering column-mounted paddles. The transmission doesn’t just work in harmony with the engine it also improves the overall performance of the Supra just by its placement, which optimizes the overall center of gravity of the sports car.
The GR Supra also comes with Normal and Sport driving modes so you can get the most out of your drive. Normal Mode offers a smooth ride, effortless shifting, easy handling, and is great for when you’re commuting to work. The Sport Mode, on the other hand, unleashes the beast within the Supra punctuated by a deeper exhaust rumble.
You’ll be racing around the track in comfort with the GR Supra’s sport seats which offers deep side bolsters, increased hold, and high-grip material to keep you up right. The seats also come with standard leather trim, two-state heating features, and 14-way power adjustments. You’re also going to love the leather-wrapped sport steering wheel which features quick responses and column-mounted paddle shifters.
The exterior of the GR Supra is designed to increased performance by way of smooth aerodynamics. The gentle curves and long lines of the Supra not only increase performance but also look enticing, they invite you to jump in behind the wheel and really test out what the 2020 Toyota GR Supra is made of.
