Yes we are back on the Nurburgring lap time topic but this time it has nothing to do with the incredible Lamborghini Huracan Performante but rather the new FWD lap record holder, the new Honda Civic Type R.
The new Civic Type R has clocked a lap time of 7min 43.8sec which means it is a healthy 3.4 seconds faster than the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S. Not only has it taken the title as fastest production front-wheel drive car around the ‘Ring but it has beaten the previous Type R’s time by nearly 7 seconds.
The lead chassis engineer for the new Civic Type R, Ryuichi Kijima, said: “The cornering speed achieved in the new Type R is higher because the car features a wider track and tyres, a longer wheelbase, new multi-link suspension in the rear and optimised aerodynamics that improves stability.“
*The car’s only modification was a ‘floating’ roll cage that Honda said offered no improvements to rigidity. To compensate for the cage’s weight, the infotainment system and rear seats were removed.
