Teaser after teaser, leak after leak, we finally have the official details on the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon.
The Demon has received some extensive modifications and Dodge are now claiming that it is the world’s quickest accelerating production car and the fastest quarter-mile production car on the market. Let’s go through some numbers then.
The 6.2-litre supercharged V8 is now good for 840 horsepower thanks to a number of changes within the powerplant. A larger, 2.7-litre supercharger was fitted to start which meant boost pressure rising from 14.5 psi to 11.6 psi, then it got new pistons, rods and a valve train being installed and the implementation of two dual-stage fuel pumps. The rev limit was also increased from 6,200 rpm to 6,500 rpm.
The 0 to 96 km/h sprint happens in just 2.3 seconds, the quarter mile is dealt with in just 9.65 seconds (225 km/h) and the Demon holds the Guinness World Record for first-ever front-wheel lift in a production car. The 1.8g of acceleration is also the highest of any production car.
The SRT Demon also becomes the first street-legal production car that can run on 100+ high-octane fuel which allows you to unleash the full 840 horsepower. The beast comes with two key fobs; one which limits power to 500 hp and a second, finished in red, that unleashes 808 hp on regular pump gas and then 840 hp when combined with the control module.
Special Nitto drag radials are installed which are not only street-legal but also increase force launch by 40% over the ‘regular’ Hellcat. It is also 90kg’s lighter thanks to the removal of the front passenger seat, rear seat, 16 speakers, the use of hollow sway bars, lightweight aluminium brake calipers and the removal of a host of wiring. If you want the seats put in, you can tick that option for just $1 each.
Production will begin middle of the year with 3,000 units destined for the States and just 300 for Canada. I sincerely hope someone manages to get one of these monsters into South Africa.
