Owning a car is expensive. The upfront cost may or may not have been a good deal, but it really doesn’t matter at the end of the day, as the initial cost is just the first of many. You’ll incur numerous costs on a daily basis simply through keeping your car running. Whilst many of these are necessities, the number of expenses you find on your bill also depends on how smart you are when it comes to cutting down costs involving elements of your car over which you do have control.

If you want to save dough on and off road, the key lies in taking ownership of your car seriously. Yes, you need to fuel your car and annually get an MOT, but you’re in charge of its everyday usage. That means you’re in charge of all additional costs which come from running a car on the daily. Perhaps you don’t know what more you could possibly do to save money whilst on and off the road, but here are some tips that might just cut down your car-related bills quite substantially every week.

    Being an economical driver.

You could save a ridiculous amount of money simply by driving sensibly. Avoiding rapid braking and acceleration, along with speeding, is the key to reducing unnecessary costs. All of these things waste far more petrol than necessary and mean you’re running your car in the least fuel-efficient way possible. Not only are you destroying the environment, but you’re destroying your back pocket.

Don’t wait for things to go wrong.

If you want to save costs, you should be keeping your car maintained before anything goes wrong. You might get a few more years out of a vehicle simply by regularly checking components of the machine in line with your owner’s manual. Of course, if you think you’ve found an issue that you don’t understand, you could always look into an auto repair service for expert help. The point is that you shouldn’t wait for a breakdown or an accident to happen, as this is far more dangerous and costly for you as a driver. Do whatever you can to regularly keep an eye on the important components of your car.

    Keep your car clean.

Believe it or not, keeping your car clean doesn’t just serve to improve the aesthetic of your vehicle, but it’ll save you money in the long run. Scratches and faded paint can result from cars left in a dirty condition for too long, and the cost of fixing blemishes or repainting is an unnecessary one which can easily be avoided simply by keeping your car washed and waxed on a regular basis. Perhaps more importantly, keeping your car clean might help you to more easily identify small scratches or cracks which could lead to more costly problems in the future. Again, it’s all about keeping a consistent eye on your vehicle.

Buy the smallest car model available.

Manufacturers love making cars bigger and bigger, but this is also increasing the size of the hole in your wallet. When you’re looking into buying a new car, you need to have a rigid list of your specific criteria so that you can choose the smallest car possible to meet your very detailed needs. Not only are smaller cars often far cheaper in terms of the upfront price when compared to their larger counterparts, but smaller cars are lighter, and this means they’re far more economical in the long run.
