The epic Golf R400 was shown two years ago in concept form at the Beijing Auto Show and it has just been confirmed that it will not be happening. VW’s R&D chief, Heinz-Jakob Neusser was the one pushing for the hot hatch to slot above the Golf R with about 395 horses on tap but since he was forced to resign (thanks to diesel scandal), the project has come to an end. The development work was not done in vain however as the tweaks they did to the EA888 engine will be used to power future Audi models. In the meantime, they will keep their focus on the next-gen Golf R which is expected after 2020.
Yesterday we heard about the Golf GTI Clubsport S showing it’s face and today we learn that it will debut at the Wörthersee Meet in Austria next week with 305bhp from the 2.0-litre engine. 5000 units will be their production target.
